A large and detailed model of the RMS Titanic which sank on her maiden voyage to New York, April 15, 1912.

L 80 x W 10 x H 32 cm.

History:
The RMS Titanic was an ocean liner for the Atlantic route Southampton-New York. The ship was designed by some of the best engineers of the time and equipped with the most advanced technology available.

On April 10, 1912, Titanic left Southampton, England for her maiden voyage. After stops in France and Ireland, she left Europe on April 11 and headed out into the Atlantic Ocean for her final destination of New York, USA. Just before midnight on April 14, the Titanic collided with an iceberg, damaging her hull so badly that in 2 hours and 40 minutes she sank to the bottom of the Atlantic.

1514 people died. The sinking of the ship thus became one of the largest peacetime maritime disasters in history. One reason for the high number of casualties was that the ship, which had about 2 225 people on board, was equipped with lifeboats for only 1 178 people. A disproportionately high number of men were among the victims, as priority was given to rescuing women and children.
